Solid Waste
Solid waste is the most evident environmental problem of the country. The rapid increase of solid waste generation is proportion to the growing goods consumption of man. The improper disposal and lack of disposal sites are seen to be the main factors that contribute to the alarming problem of solid waste.
On 16 February 2001, Republic Act 9003 known as the "Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000" was enacted to serve as the country's framework in addressing the problem. This newly enacted law basically requires the practice of waste segregation at source to reduce and minimize the generation of waste. No new open dumpsite is allowed to operate upon its effectivity . In 2004, all existing dumpsites must be converted into controlled dumpsites upon the evaluation of the National Solid Waste Management Commission and allowed to operate for two years. Then by 2006, all controlled dumpsites shall be automatically replaced with a Sanitary Landfill.
Business and industry sectors planning and implementing Solid Waste Management Program are given incentives based on the Invest Code of the Philippines. Please visit the Downloads section for available references for download.
